Cute yellow bird coffee mug!!

Anonymous asked: What does "You're the yellow bird that I've been waiting for" mean or make reference to?

It’s referencing a Simon Joyner song called Came A Yellow Bird. I believe the song is about suicide and the way it can really hurt others. (I never wanted to harm anybody else / It was just I who wished to die / And the tears came rolling down / And the floor fell underneath / And the yellow bird folded her wings together / And I dragged her down with me). So the yellow bird would be something beautiful (maybe beauty itself or hope or even freedom idk) and the suicide-committer destoryed that without meaning to in their selfishness. But idk I’m not lit major sooo maybe check it out yourself haha. Here’s a link.

This is from a Simon Joyner interview:

How do you feel about Bright Eyes borrowing the yellow bird symbol for I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning?

That song of mine, ‘Came a Yellow Bird,’ it was a really important song for Conor. He lost somebody in his family and wrote all the songs where he references that song of mine, because he really appreciated that song of mine. He came over, before he recorded the songs and played them for me and asked if it was okay that he referenced my song in these songs of his that he was working on and of course it was not a problem. I was flattered that the song meant so much to him that he kind of pulled out a symbol that he wanted to use, because it had to do with the same kind of message. So, he just thought of it as making sense to reference this symbol. I was flattered. He did a great job writing about a difficult subject and I was glad to be a part of it in that way.

Yellow Bird Meaning

  • According to the book In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, a yellow bird is a symbol for hope and a way out of suffering (thanks riotforless!)
  • Canaries (which are yellow) are used in coal mines as a warning to ensure that minors can escape safely (thank you anon and xtbuddy).

So basically Conor’s cousin Colin, who committed suicide, was the thing that ended Conor’s “paralysis” and caused him to realize that he needed to change things, or “escape” his current way of life. Colin gave Conor hope.

Anonymous asked: What is, "you're the yellow bird I've been waiting for" supposed to symbolize?

Well a lot of people think that a yellow bird symbolizes true love. While this may be true, Poison Oak is about Conor’s cousin Colin who committed suicide, so I don’t really think that fits in this context. There is a song by Simon Joyner (who Conor has named as a huge influence) called Came A Yellow Bird which says: “Everytime you wish to die / An arrow was released / And the only thing between dark and light / Was my breast or yellow wings / I never wanted to harm anybody else / It’s just I who wish to die / And then the tears came rolling down / And the floor fell underneath / And the yellow bird folded her wings together / And I dragged her down with me.” I guess you could interpret this to mean that Conor feels like he dragged Colin down by being depressed himself. The yellow bird is was what caused Conor to realize that he needs to stop being so depressed/suicidal and get his shit together (“the end of paralysis”). I’m not 100% sure this is what Conor meant by “You’re the yellow bird that I’ve been waiting for” but it’s my little theory haha. Do my followers have any other ideas?

on my right hip

it’s a representation of the yellow bird from the bright eyes song, poison oak. hope is my mom’s middle name, and i got this tattoo for her. she’s having an ongoing battle with lupus and cancer, and this tattoo is supposed to represent the hope i have for her and for her getting better.

Yellow bird tattoos are the best. Love it.
