The song usually starts with a chord progression, either on piano or guitar then we’ll add vocals or melodies. I’ll just demo it real fast and bring it to the band, then we decide how to approach it. Sometimes we’ll try several different versions and we’ll talk about what the drums and bass should do. We’re not a live band at all. We’re a band because what you hear in the end is sort of a composite of all our ideas, but we’re not a live band in the sense that it’s very much a studio project. We’ve been doing this for a while so it’s always good to mix things up and not get too set in your ways. This was an interesting record because we had unlimited time and space. We didn’t feel the pressure in the sense that we were taking breaks between sessions. A lot of times the guys think about songs by living with earlier versions of them and saying “I like this” or “this isn’t working” and we’ll go back and try it another way. That was a good thing for us because with other records we were under the gun. No one was watching the clock or anything and I think the songs are better for it.

You and me, you and me. That is an awful lie. It’s I and I.

I and I is a complex term, referring to the oneness of Jah (God) and every human. Rastafari scholar E. E. Cashmore: “I and I is an expression to totalize the concept of oneness, the oneness of two persons. So God is within all of us and we’re one people in fact. The bond of Ras Tafari is the bond of God, of man. But man itself needs a head and the head of man is His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I (always pronounced as the letter ‘I’, never as the number one or ‘the first’) of Ethiopia.” The term is often used in place of “you and I” or “we” among Rastafari, implying that both persons are united under the love of Jah.

Let us not forget that today is also the official birthday of The People’s Key. To all of us, Conor’s birthday is basically Christmas lol. Well to me, the anniversary of The People’s Key is New Years. Because this past year has been incredible… all the Bright Eyes shows I’ve been to, the people I’ve met (in the band and out), and the new music I’ve discovered because of the tour. It all began with the release of this album. It’s a great album and I love it so damn much. Here’s to many many more years of listening to this masterpiece (and hoping for a couple new ones along the way!)

Last one!

I just can’t get over how beautiful and awesome this is, so I have to reblog it again.

OMG. This is awesome.

Want to win a copy of The People’s Key signed by Conor himself?

At the meet-up we are giving away a lot of amazing prizes (a pit ticket to the Bright Eyes show, a poster signed by the entire band, and other Bright Eyes merch). This signed CD is a pretty awesome prize too, but it’s going to work a little differently - you don’t have to be a part of the meet-up to win! In an effort to raise money for the meet-up, Conny thought of the brilliant idea of holding a silent auction. The contest will run from now until July 25th. The way it will work is Conny and I will have a paypal donate button on our pages (that are linked to the same account), which you can click and then put whatever amount you wish to donate. Whoever donates the highest amount will win the CD. Multiple donations will add up and we will mail to anywhere in the world! If you help spread the word and reblog this post, we will give you bonus points when totaling your amount. For example, if you donate $10, we will count your total as $11 when selecting the winner.
